Four days in Jászberény, capital of Jazygia

Lake Tisza
Abádszalók, where summer is pure fun
Day 1 Abádszalók lies on the left shore of Lake Tisza, in Attila Bay where a series of events called Abádszalók Summer Festival, offer varied and colourful programmes throughout the summer. Morning programme: see the sights in the centre of Abádszalók: World War I & II Memorials, the busts of Laki Kálmán and Ember Mária, the symbolic monument to the unification of the villages of Tiszaabád and Tiszaszalók. Visit the Doll Museum where more than 200 hundred dolls dressed in characteristics folk costumes from different regions of the Carpathian Basin are displayed. Day 2 Embark on a whole-day cycling tour around Lake Tisza following the cycle-path which offers close observation of the lake’s wonderful natural values.
Day 3 Take part in a demonstration of bone lace making with handicrafts practice sessions for both adults and children. By appointment preparation of typical local fish dishes and involvement in baking layered strudel is possible in an Abádszalók guesthouse.

Tiszafüred, capital of Lake Tisza
Day 1 Tiszafüred lies on the north-esas shore of Lake Tisza comprising a water surface of 127 km². The region includes the Lake Tisza Bird Refuge with its strictly protected core area forming a World Heritage site. Following Tiszavirág Flood Area Walking Trek you will encounter unspoilt water world and an enchanting natural environment. The 1,500 metre long educational trek introduces you to the life cycle of the may fly in the course of 10 stations. The furthermost stop on the trek reaches the internal lake of the island where boats are provided for tourists wishing to discover the fabulous world of the lake on their own. The two most famous handicrafts of Tiszafüred are pottery and saddle making. The finest pieces of local pottery can be seen in Nyúzó Gáspár Pottery & Folk Art Museum as well as in the operating workshops of Török Zsóka and Szűcs Imre. In the Leather Crafts Workshop local folk artists, Horváth Tibor and his wife, are holding demonstration and creative work sessions by appointment. Of the traditional series of events, dubbed Tiszafüred Rendez Vous and lasting all summer, the most exciting is the Tiszafüred Fish Festival.

Day 4 The extended area of Lake Tisza offers all sorts of tours on water, on bicycle, on horseback or simply on foot. Middle-Tisza Region
Relaxing in Szolnok, „the capital river Tisza”
Day 1 Take a sightseeing walk: crossing the bridge over River Zagyva close where it reaches River Tisza, you arrive at a historical monument to the Battle of Szolnok commemorating the heroic vistory of General Damjanich and his soldiers during the War of Independence of 1848/49. The nearby Artists’ Colony has been accommodating many painters, sculptors and other creative artists during its history of over 150 years. Its exhibition hall holds temporary shows of various artists also outside the colony inhabitants. Home page: www.szolnokimuvesztelep.com The old district of Tabán, once a fishing village, has preserved its winding narrow streets and atmosphere, however, mostly with new buildings. A notable exception is the Tabán Folk Art House built in the 1930s showcasing the fishing tools used in the old days. Damjanich János Museum, located in the city’s main (Kossuth) square houses historical and ethnographic collections from different regions of the country. A few metres further we reach the promenade on the bank of River Tisza with its hotel and Turkish bath of the same name built in Neo-Baroque style. Offering the most beautiful sight of the city, giant chestnut trees line the river’s embankment to the main bridge.
Day 2 Wander around the city’s residential park called Tiszaliget. Plunge in the water in the freshly renovated and modernized Thermal Bath and Fun Swimming Pool equipped with six pools, several water slides, stream corridors and a boating lake. Day 3 Take a bicycle trip via Szandaszőlős to Rákóczifalva. (Distance is approx. 15 km.) On the way you can stop to visit the biggest military aircraft exhibition in the country at the Hungarian Aviation History Museum and Exhibition. Home page: www.tiszainform.com/muzeum Arriving at Rákóczifalva visit ”Bear Army” Teddy Bear Museum. The almost 100 year-old toy bears recreate the atmosphere of different historical periods. A 4 km ride from the centre of Rákóczifalva, will take you to a 10 km long Tourist Educational Trek on the banks of River Tisza. Day 4 An outdoor programme suited to children and adults is recommended in the Széchenyi Park Forest with children’s playground, forest exercise trek, tourist education trek, picnic areas and a small zoo awaiting visitors looking for recreation and a bit of physical exercise in a pleasant environment. Recreation in Nagykörű, the cherry orchard of Hungary
Day 1 Spend a pleasant day in the Folk Art House, where a visiting family can bake a milk-loaf in an outdoor oven and get familiarized with the fundamentals of traditional crafts like basketwork, planking, cornhusk weaving, etc. You can also see the ethnography exhibition and a local collection of archaeological finds. Carting and coach riding is also possible. The tour will take us along the sights of the village and its historical monuments.
Day 2 Get acquainted with the flora and fauna of Nagykörű and the surrounding area on a walking or cycling eco-tour escorted by a professional guide. The tour also introduces you to the Nagykörű Land Management Project an important element of which is the programme aimed to utilize the navvy ditches along the dykes of the river.
Day 3 Nagykörű is home to the country’s largest contiguous territory of cherry orchard going back to almost one hundred years. Visit the unparalleled Cherry tree species collection boasting more than 100 varieties all bearing fruit in the extensive area. A traditional series of events organized in July is, obviously, called Cherry Festival.
See the exhibitions in Nagykörű Culture Centre with permanent displays of Weapons and Navy History. A visit to the local Pálinka Distillery complete with sampling is a must for every adult tourist introducing them to the process of pálinka distillation and rewarding them with a shot of the unrivalled 1977 vintage cherry pálinka of Nagykörű.
Day 4 Go swimming on the lido of the Tisza River with its extensive sandy shore suitable for playing beach volleyball and foot tennis offering excellent bathing and relaxation for the visitor.

Staying in Karcag, the “capital of Nagykunság”
Day 1 Begin your sightseeing in Györffy István Nagykun Museum, where professional guides introduce you to the past and present of the Nagykun Region. Home page: www.djm.hu. An integral part of the museum is the Kántor Sándor Pottery Collection and the Nagykunság Folk Art House. The pottery collection displays the valuable works of Kossuth Prize winner master potter Kántor Sándor. Nagykunság Folk Art House shows the typical peasant house and its manor of Karcag from the 18th to the 20th century. „In June in Karcag, mutton stew on the table” – every year, this characteristic local dish, national dish of the Cumanians is boils on an open fire in over a hundred cauldrons with the surrounding display of Cumanian folk art and traditions culminating in the Karcag Mutton Stew Cooking Contest.
Day 2 Go cart riding starting out from the Karcag Cumanian Stables to the edge of the Hortobágy and visit Zádor Bridge, whose foundation stone was laid in October 1806. On your way to the bridge you pass by the Karcag Windmill and the adjacent Windmill Guesthouse both worth a visit. The Karcag Cumanian Stables breed indigenous and unique animals as well.
Day 3 Visit the town’s Swimming Pool & Medicinal Bath and plunge into any of the pools offering curative water, fun for children or serious swimming for the athletic types. Home page: www.karcag.hu
Day 4 Karcag is famous of its masters of handicrafts and folk artists. Craftsmen’s House displays the works of the members of Nagykunság Folk Art Association, craftsmen active even today. You can visit potters’ workshops and see them in action.

Relaxation in Kisújszállás
Day 1 Take a walk in the town centre and see the listed building of the Reformed Church, the impressive building of the Town Hall, the Roman Catholic Church and the row of chestnut trees in Kossuth Lajos Street. In Papi Lajos Art Studio you can see an exhibition of the bequest of late local sculptor, Papi Lajos. Day 2 Go on a coach ride in the outskirts of the town where you can still enjoy the undisturbed beauty of the scenery and natural beauties of Nagykunság (Cumania Maior). Get acquainted with the horsemanship traditions of the region, the animals indigenous to the region and the livestock of a farmhouse on the Horváth residence. Enjoy a goulash-party on the farmhouse and a hearty talk around the campfire if requested to the music of the Hungarian double-reed oboe or the zither. The Kun Tournament organized on the third weekend of every September includes an international mounted archery contest, falconer demonstrations and cooking competition.

Day 4 The oldest residential building preserved in the town is the Folk Art House, which is furnished as a traditional Cumanian peasant home. Berekfürdő, the „gold of Nagykunság”
Day 1 Take a walk around the village then go bathing in the Thermal- and Swimming Pool. This quiet, homely place is ideal to dip into the curative thermal water dubbed as the „gold of Nagykunság”. The renovated pools stretching along the vast wooded area can be used for night bathing as well and even in the winter season taking in the healing iodine-laden microclimate.
Day 2 Visit the neighbouring village of Kunmadaras and see the Kossuth Lajos Memorial Home. Carry on to Kenderes and visit the Horthy Mansion built in the early 19th century. Today the building serves as the dormitory to the students of an Agricultural Vocational School. Visit the crypt of the Horthy family in the cemetery of Kenderes.
Day 3 Take a cycling trip to the Cumanian mounds in the fields of Berekfürdő and the unparalleled colony of bee eaters. This interesting protected bird with its beautiful song can be observed here from spring to autumn.
Day 4 Embark on a fishing trip in Berekfürdőn on the Internal Lake of a water surface of 7.4 ha and a water reservoir of 14 ha. Both lakes are supported by the thermal waters of the swimming pools so fishing is ensured in winter, too. From May you are allowed to catch African catfish as well in the Internal Lake.

Day 1 Climb the stairs to the top of the Town Hall Tower in Mezőtúr and enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of the town. Then walk to the Túr Pottery Museum and see the collection of international fame. Day 2 Morning programme: visit the Pony Farm on the banks of Hortobágy-Berettyó Main Canal. Services include riding and carting offering discovery of the unspoilt natural beauty of the backwaters of the river, angling in the farm’s own lake, a forest playground for children complete with kite flying. Afternoon programme: visit Körös-Valley Environmental Display. The building converted from a 100-year-old pump house preserved the steam pumps in their original condition and a collection introducing visitors to the unique flora and fauna of the Körös Region.
Day 3 Visit the town of Túrkeve, an ancient settlement of Nagykunság. Finta Museum showcasing the scenery and history of Keve is well worth a visit. Recreation in Martfűn and its region
Day 1 A set of impressive buildings attract the visitor to the atmospheric main square of Martfű with the modern Saint Thomas Roman Catholic Church showing features of Indian architecture, the Town Hall, the bronze statue of King St. Stephen and the Time Gate Millennial Monument.
